Lees
150 Years of Innovation in Carpets
James Lees was a quality-conscious, forward-thinking immigrant from England when he entered the American textile business in 1856. One hundred and fifty years later, the company he founded is a growing business, continually exploring new market opportunities, and remaining true to the vision of its creator.
Lees, a division of Burlington Industries since 1960, has a long history of innovation and leadership in carpets:
- Pioneer in use of wool in extra twist fabrics.
- First to use needle insertion looms, producing a widely affordable carpet.
- Inventor of woven polypropylene as a primary backing source.
- First to use Unitary-backed carpet, leading to the glue-down installation method.
- First to introduce carpet tile to the commercial market.
- Inventor of Unibond® backing system.
- First to offer lifetime warranty on Unibond, covering edge ravel and delamination, and guaranteeing a 20-lb. tuft bind.
- Inventor of Self-Lock self-adhesive backing system for carpet tiles, making installation and removal easy and economical.
- Inventor of Duracolor® technology, providing the only permanent stain, soil and fade resistant products on the market.
- Duracolor® MD also adds bleach resistance, for use in health-care facilities.
Lees' primary production facility, located in Glasgow, Virginia, was founded in 1935 -- the South's first carpet plant. A slogan attached to each loom in those early days remains true today: "Quality First -- then yardage." Lees is unmatched in color offerings, quality and product performance.
